Hi Quentin,

Given the long list of firmware updates for the various models, can we please have a refresh on Emergency Recovery Utility images for all the Billion models.

Regards,
Ian.

Hi Ian & Alan

Your feedback has been noted, please be aware that this was created for a specific purpose, to overcome inability to upgrade firmware.

For those of us who are handy with Linux, could you please outline the upgrade process?

I suspect it's as simple as a tftp transfer, followed by a flash erase/write operation.

I can't get the Windows based 7402VGP utility to work with wine or with VMWare.

Sorry, Rajah, but I use two Apple Mac computers and I can't get my 7402VGO to update. What am I supposed to do?

Hi Benja

This utility is only required if you can't upgrade normally via flash, which works fine with Macs.

If you are unable to flash normally you will need to do this with a Windows machine (eg friends) or return to place of purchase for reflashing under warranty.

Which browser are you using?

Cheers

I'm using Firefox. It's not under warranty anymore, so I might have to get a friend to help me out.

v5.52e of the firmware available from the website just doesn't work. mad.gif
I tried this several times, using an older recovery tool between attempts. The link you provided above with v5.52f and Recovery Tool worked first time.
Thank you! biggrin.gif

Hi backspace

The firmware file is not meant to work with the recovery utility, this requires the image file that is included with utility.

Yes I realise that. (Of course I'm going to try the easier way first - downloading the 'usual' firmware and upgrade via the web interface tongue.gif ) I was recovering using an older image 5.04 (or something) which was sent to me by support with the older versions 3 and 4 of the recovery utility (just 2 days ago! mad.gif ), and then trying to upgrade to 5.52e (from the website) using the usual web interface. This would fail every time. I tried several platforms and several browsers. My router just would not accept 5.52e. This utility (v5) and it accompanying 5.52f file was the only way I could ugrade my router. So hence I suspect there is something up with the 'usual' 5.52e currently posted at: http://www.billion.com.au/support/bipac7402vgo.php

I found the problem with failing firmware upgrades is, in my case, Norton Internet Security 2007. More specifically the fraud monitor, I think.
When I finally went through the recovery procedure, I switched off Norton IS2007 and upgrades work fine now!

Why would you (anyone) have Nortons internet security (or Nortons full stop) in the first place, let alone with a modem like this.
Do yourself a favour throw Nortons in the toilet where it belongs, turn On you windows firewall, make sure MS security updates are all done and then forget it.
Also watch your computer spring back to life.

99.9% of general users do NOT need extra firewalls other than that provided by Windows.
Reasons:
- 99.9% of people do not have Nationally sensitive material on their computer.
- 99.9% of general users do not understand all the erroneous messages that these programs keep popping up at them anyway.
- Usually the wrong things are blocked and the wrongs things allowed, making the firewall useless anyway.
- A lot of these programs offer no configurability especially when you find that you have blocked something you shouldn't have.
Unlike most models of Billion modems.

My 2 cents worth
